In experiments with 2,585 people, a finance business labeled βwoman-ownedβ was rated 8.6% more competent and 10.9% higher in service quality than the same business without the label. The effect was strongest, at 26.8% higher perceived quality, when the owner's experience level was unknown and in competitive or male-dominated industries. The label works because it signals confidence, challenging the stereotype that women are less competent in business.
